My 10th time seeing 3 Inches of Blood.

Filed under: General, Music, Photography - Susan M @ 5:40 pm

Last night in Hollywood at the Whisky-a-Go-Go. Lame venue (they actually make bands pay to play there–but the three bands I went to see weren’t pay-to-play).

It was all ages so we took our youngest, Elijah (he’s 12). He’s seen them before and even got to hang out with one of the guitarists after the show, so he was looking forward to seeing them again. He wasn’t sure Shane would remember him, but of course he did.

We saw one of the singers, Jamie, outside the club when we first got there, so we went over to deliver a gift we’d brought the band–three packs of tube socks. He laughed and said the guys would be thrilled. We were laughing because none of them were wearing socks at all. It’s hard being a broke band on the road. Especially when there’s 6 people in the band!

So we went inside and caught Bad Wizard. Straight up rock, basically a bar band, but really good. We’ve seen them before in Seattle. I enjoyed them more this time, not sure why. Either I’m more into that type of rock these days or they were just better than the first time. They have a girl guitarist and a pretty spazzy/cool front man.

Early Man were next. Daniel’s been dying to see these guys live and he loved every minute of it. Their lineup for this tour is two guitarists and a drummer (no bassist). They were awesome.

3 Inches were headlining and all the kids there loved it. It’s so fun to go to an all ages metal show—the kids get so into it. There was a pit and a couple kids even did stage dives, although they got kicked out for doing so.

After the show, Elijah wanted to say hi to Shane, the guitarist, so we waited for him to be free. He came over and immediately gave Elijah an elaborate handshake and started chatting. Elijah told him he wanted to learn how to make the galloping guitar sound and that his guitar cord broke. Shane gave him one, plus a pick, and told him if we can get to tonight’s show early he can teach Elijah some stuff on the guitar!

They’re playing tonight in Corona, we’re heading out there for it. This’ll be number 11. We’ve seen them out there before—there’ll be kids throwing underwear on stage (some joke the local kids have with the band), lots of stage diving, and lots of fun had by all.

And Mike, where were you? Did you miss it?

  2. Oh, that’s too bad. I hope she’s feeling better.

I’m not sure now if I’ll make it to Corona. I got no sleep last night and I’m dragging hard today.

I want to try to catch the Upper Crust on Friday, have you heard about them?
