Lyric game.

Filed under: General, Music - Susan M @ 5:15 pm

Laura posted some of her favorite lyric snippets on her blog, without naming who they were by, to see who could recognize them. It was fun, and I’m obviously a lyrics-obsesser, so I’m going to do it too. Feel free to post your own fave lyrics as well. And go guess at Laura’s too.

I’ll try to think of stuff that’s not too obscure…this might be tough.

I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them, but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware?

What on earth is going on in my heart?
Has it turned as cold as stone?
Seems these days I don’t feel anything
‘Less it cuts me right down to the bone
What on earth is going on in my heart?

Why won’t you ever be glad?
It melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why won’t you run into rain and play?
And let the tears splash all over you

Fighting for the smallest goal: to gain a little self-control
Won’t anybody here just let you disappear?
Not doctors, nor your mom and dad, but me and Mia, Ann and Ana
Know how hard you try. Don’t you see it in my eyes?
Sick to death of my dependence, fighting food to find transcendence
Fighting to survive, more dead but more alive
Cigarettes and speed for livin’, and sleeping pills to feel forgiven

You left the window open till the morning and the winter walked in
Reality fired her wooden bullet, splintered under our skin

Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Don’t let the uncertainty turn you around
(The world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound

Years ago I was an angry young man
I’d pretend that I was a billboard
Standing tall, by the side of the road
I fell in love with a beautiful highway

  1. I don’t know the first one, but that’s a great line.

I love David Gray and those lines are the most wrenching on that album.

I know the Jackson Browne song just because of the mix you sent me.

And, you have to love the Talking Heads. Byrne’s lyrics are fabulous (he has a blog - have you read it?).

I’ve thought of a hundred other great lyrics since I posted yesterday, but I think listing them would just be tedious. Since you are a Jackson Browne fan, I’ll mention this one:

We may lose and we may win
But we will never be here again

    Simple, but I love it.

  2. Yeah I kept thinking, “There’s gotta be better ones than these to use” but I just went with whatever I had in my head at the time.

The one that mentions Ann and Ana is about eating disorders. Ana = anorexia, Mia = bulemia.

  3. Man, I must be lyrically lame, because I only picked up on the Jackson Browne… but WOW- I especially like ‘reality’s wooden bullet’
Are you going to let the clueless (me) in on who they all are eventually?

  4. Yeah probably next week. Each of these are songs I’ll probably do individual posts on eventually, too!
